An outstanding, wholly original metroidvania that trades combat for exploration and cryptic puzzle platforming, with discoverable multi-use items, brilliant boss encounters that function as environmental puzzles, and forgiving traversal that keeps the focus on discovery. Gorgeous custom-engine pixel art and exceptional, immersive sound design create a haunting, alive world. The only minor flaw is some required re-completion of environmental puzzles during backtracking; otherwise a masterpiece.

Animal Well is an enjoyable adventure full of mystery, clever puzzles, and freedom to explore, with precise controls and striking atmosphere. Its limited character identity and short runtime weaken its appeal compared with other Metroidvanias.
