Our analysis

Fantastic Metroidvania; Switch suffers from performance issues.

Our analysis

Essentially Castlevania: Symphony of the Night again, but bigger and modernized, blending the best ideas from Igarashi's later Castlevanias such as Aria of Sorrow's soul-collecting and Ecclesia's villager sidequests. It delivers fully on its Kickstarter promise, held back only by minor niggles: the full-3D art looks uglier than crafted pixel art, the protagonist's ridiculous design, a balky cutscene-skip interface, the occasionally obscure critical path, and a weapon-unequip bug. A rare overfunded crowdfunded project that works.

    Our analysis

Koji Igarashi's passion project delivers compelling metroidvania gameplay with wonderful easter eggs and community involvement, but weak storytelling and extreme grind/difficulty challenges test player patience.
