Octopath Traveler II

A triumphant follow-up that builds on the original with welcome new ideas, standing as one of the finest JRPGs on Switch. The strategic turn-based combat is deepened by the new latent power system on top of returning boost and break mechanics, while open-ended class progression, well-written character stories, gorgeous HD-2D visuals, and a stellar soundtrack round it out. Its main shortcoming is that it doesn't do enough to distinguish itself as a distinct successor.

A modern classic and one of the best turn-based RPGs on Switch, blending eight varied, well-told character stories that now intertwine more naturally than before. The robust break-and-boost battle system, new latent powers, dual weapons, and secondary jobs make combat fresh and strategic, while the HD-2D visuals with exceptional lighting and a layered score are sublime. Excessive grinding and some still, jarring boss models are minor knocks against an otherwise excellent adventure.

An ideal sequel that gives the franchise a stronger identity, with thoroughly excellent turn-based combat built on breaking enemy defenses, the boost system, and new latent powers as its high point. The day-night cycle, path actions, and freeform nonlinear progression all enrich exploration, and the variety of character stories keeps things engaging even if a few arcs fall flat. Low-level newcomers requiring grind, very basic dungeons, and a nonsensical reputation system are minor quibbles in an otherwise delightful experience.
