An utterly fantastic action-adventure that emulates Zelda wonderfully across a roughly 40-hour quest. Its ink-wash Japanese art style and celestial brush mechanic give it a wholly unique identity, backed by a serene, mystical soundtrack. Combat shows its age and enemies put up little resistance, but at $20 it remains one of the easiest recommendations for the Switch.
Our analysis
A re-release of the classic PS2 action-adventure that is still highly regarded chiefly for its beautiful Shinto-inspired art and soundtrack. The pacing is languid and the Celestial Brush is temperamental with analog sticks, while the Zelda-like combat is neither difficult nor especially slick. Even so, it offers the catharsis of a simple, uplifting story with lively, engaging characters that feels lovingly crafted.
Our analysis
Ōkami HD is a solid, accessible action-adventure with engaging celestial-brush powers and striking ink-wash visuals. Its repetitive, bloated story and easy combat limit the appeal, but Johnny still recommends the remaster.
