8 of 8A hands-on preview comes away pleasantly surprised after going in skeptical: the real-time battling and catching are the standout, feeling genuinely tactical with move cooldowns, positional moves like whirlpool and toxic spikes, item-use cooldowns that preserve challenge, and returning alpha encounters and trainer death stakes. The weaknesses are everything else — the all-city setting looks bland and corridor-like with very basic Switch 2 visuals, and the dialogue and writing remain sterile and lacking personality.
One of the best Pokemon spin-offs. Build communities of Pokemon as equals with innovative habitat system.
Contained city Pokemon adventure with addictive gameplay but significant technical shortcomings.
Revolutionary real-time battle system replacing turn-based combat. May define franchise future.
Improvement over Scarlet/Violet with better animations and charming writing. Smaller and more confined.
Promising real-time combat shakes up stale formula but held back by dated visuals and single-city setting.
SwitchUp review scored 70%. Decent with caveats.

“ZA is a modest improvement over Legends: Arceus with a refreshing real-time battle system, but ultimately feels bland, rushed, and underambitious. The game is functional and occasionally enjoyable, but lacks depth, passion, and meaningful story progression despite Game Freak's continued corners-cutting and lazy design choices.”
Watch- JJRPG Jungle😐 mixed
“A charming city-based Pokémon game that blends exploration, battles, and JRPG storytelling with memorable characters and engaging gameplay over a 30-hour campaign.”
Watch Second Wind👎 negative
“A lazy, aesthetically bland entry in the Pokémon franchise with poor storytelling, stiff animations, and uninspired world design, though the real-time combat system is a minor improvement over Legends: Arceus.”

“A spin-off that blends real-time action with turn-based mechanics, set in Lumiose City where trainers can be hit in battles and players rank their Pokemon from Z to A.”

“The reviewer acknowledges the game varies from the main Pokémon formula but finds it ultimately forgettable due to poor graphics, repetitive quests, and limited exploration, despite appreciating the music.”
Watch - Aarhn.eu😐 mixed
“A fresh approach to the Pokémon series with real-time battles and a confined setting in Lumiose City, offering engaging gameplay but hampered by repetitive visuals, a scripted ranking system, and narrative padding that frustrates its innovative combat system.”
Watch - KKENT for 任天堂ゲームレビュー👍 positive
“A bold challenge that expands the possibilities of Pokémon with an innovative real-time battle system, compelling characters, and dense map design. Despite some pacing issues and repetitive mid-game sections, the game represents meaningful evolution for the franchise.”
