A flawed but genuinely fun return to classic arena shooting that delivers exactly what the series is about: 19 weapons, mechs, vehicles, and hordes of varied enemies across big open maps stuffed with secrets. It is badly let down by a buggy launch state, with crashes, graphical glitches, broken co-op rejoining, and progression-blocking issues, plus a misleading hyped-up legion system that rarely throws thousands of foes at you. Reducing co-op to four players and intrusive friendly NPCs also disappoint, but it still earns a recommendation.

Yahtzee: ''if it ain''t broke don''t fix it'' philosophy, but new features (skill tree, mech, riding monsters) are clumsy add-ons that don''t enhance core gameplay. If you want more Sam, this obliges.
