A phenomenal psychological horror and one of the best entries in the series, trading the small-town America setting for slow-burning Japanese horror with brilliant writing, spectacular visuals, and Akira Yamaoka's outstanding score. Engaging, more action-oriented combat with dodging and parrying, tense resource and weapon-durability management, and five meaningfully different endings make multiple playthroughs essential. A couple of convoluted puzzles drag and combat occasionally lacks feedback, but these are minor blemishes on a remarkable evolution.
