A standout survival game that wins over even a skeptic of the genre through curiosity-driven exploration, organic discovery instead of hand-holding objectives, and a stratified ocean that gates progression in ways that feel natural and rewarding. Its mystery and storytelling shine, though optimization is poor and the final third drags with a tedious grind and the clumsy, slow Cyclops.
Our analysis
A gorgeous, deeply atmospheric single-player underwater survival and exploration game with stunning visuals, an enormous crafting system, genuinely scary alien creatures, and a strong sense of immersion. The constant hunt for food and water can grow tedious, replayability is limited, and there is some terrain pop-in plus broken VR support. Early access done right and easily worth the asking price.
Our analysis
Both Subnautica and Below Zero represent excellent survival experiences on Switch, with the original being the definitive version despite Below Zero's improved mechanics and story focus.
Our analysis
A beautiful and often terrifying open-world undersea survival game that earns its critical acclaim, excelling at isolation, claustrophobic vertical biome diving, and a standout soundtrack and audio that are carried over excellently. On Switch it holds a locked 30fps about 80% of the time but struggles with faster vehicles, larger areas, and on-land sections, dropping frames with variable frame pacing. The handheld experience is preferable and the slow, overwhelming early game and some clunky crafting are minor caveats; wholeheartedly recommended for survival fans mindful of the performance limits.
Our analysis
ZP: genuinely worthwhile exploration and base building with good story.
