A worthwhile buy in early access, this is a deep and unforgiving survival simulator with relentless cold, hunger, thirst, and fatigue systems plus a strong weather model and a well-realized world where everything interlocks. Standout sound, music, and voice carry the atmosphere and offset rough, low-polygon graphics, occasional bad collision detection, and odd animal AI. The aggressive item-durability system grates, but the hard-as-nails challenge and steady give-and-take loop keep it compelling for fans of the genre.

The Long Dark's survival mode is excellent, providing one of the best immersive survival experiences with outstanding mechanics, atmosphere, and sound design. However, the story mode significantly undermines the overall package with boring fetch quests, unfinished linear sections, and weak character development.
