8 of 8From a backseat perspective, this is the most frenetically violent first-person shooter ever made, with an awesome death-metal soundtrack and astonishingly meticulous, over-the-top sound and visual design. The relentless onslaught of effects can feel overwhelming to watch rather than play, and the constant hunt for secrets and weapon-upgrade challenges interrupts the flow. Still a genuinely strong, satisfying game.
Despite some sizeable misgivings, it remains one of the best first-person-shooter experiences around, with glorious advanced movement (the super-shotgun meathook is a standout) and a more cerebral, weapon-switching combat loop that makes things far harder and more demanding. The ammo economy feels slightly over-tuned, the new platforming is slow and incongruent, the cutscene-heavy storytelling lands flat, and the Marauder is a poorly-implemented flow-killer. Still strongly recommended.
A fundamentally good game carried entirely by fantastic, fast-paced combat — once you find the groove of weak-point targeting, weapon-swapping and grappling/glory kills, it's a blast. It's dragged down by repetitive arenas and enemies, far too much saturated weapon/suit progression, pointless collectibles, a weak story, and intrusive Tomb Raider-style platforming that breaks the flow. Runs well with deep options despite a few crashes.
This Switch port endures one of the most severe visual downgrades to fit on the hardware, looking blurry in screenshots and especially rough in handheld, yet it holds a rock-solid 30fps. Because the push-forward combat is so fast and relentless, the visual cuts fade away in motion and the action stays just as pure and fun as on other platforms. An impressive, near-miraculous port.
A hugely impressive Switch port that pushes the id Tech 7 engine to its limits, holding a constant 30fps in both docked and handheld modes with excellent, highly customizable gyro aiming. The strategic, refined combat, exceptional level design, standout soundtrack, and clever 2v1 multiplayer make it a joy to play, with only minor visual clarity loss and a slightly steep price as drawbacks.
A fast, chaotic shooter that builds on Doom 2016's arena combat, but its push to add more of everything leaves it bloated and undisciplined. The deeper weapon-management and tutorial interruptions can break the cathartic flow, and the heavy lore dumps undercut the joke of a protagonist who doesn't care about meaning. Still good, just in need of restraint.
A legendary, near-perfect sequel that overhauls and improves nearly everything: relentless combat, rich weapon and traversal options, a deepened story with satisfying lore, and generous free customization and unlockables. The brutal difficulty builds you up as much as it breaks you, and the focused multiplayer fits the franchise. Only minor nitpicks: an underwhelming ending cutscene and a disappointingly balanced unmaker weapon.
A staggeringly confident, blazingly fast shooter whose relentless combat, resource-from-enemies system, and chess-like arena battles make every fight an engaging value proposition. Excellent secret hunting and phenomenal presentation round it out. Minor weaknesses include uneven, sometimes too-easy collectibles, occasionally rigid level design, and a Battlemode multiplayer that lacks longevity, but the core experience delivers rare satisfaction.

“A masterfully designed FPS with innovative 'Push Forward Combat' mechanics, engaging storyline, and exceptional replay value that significantly improves upon its predecessor, though controller limitations and pacing issues in story presentation prevent perfection.”
