A dense, immersive 15th-century RPG with gorgeous detailed worlds, reactive snowballing quests, and a refreshing hands-off design free of detective vision or yellow paint. But it is a hard, maddening slog: obtuse stat systems, poor tutorials, stingy saves that can undo hours, weak repetitive combat, the insufferable Hans Capon, and bloated cutscenes wear you down. There is much to admire, but only on its own abrasive terms, and it is not built to make you feel good.
