Metroid Prime Remastered

Essentially a visual spruce-up with welcome dual-stick controls that finally fix the original's awkward setup. The combat is the weakest part, with feeble basic shots, slow charge attacks, and constantly respawning enemies, and the lack of modern conveniences means plenty of tedious backtracking. Its enduring strength is atmosphere, nailing a bleak, oppressive, lonely world through its environments, weapon effects, and soundtrack.

A bona fide masterpiece and essential Switch title that stunningly revamps every art asset while leaving the original game fully intact. The new twin-stick controls work flawlessly for veterans and newcomers, the moment-to-moment exploration and lock-on combat remain exceptional, and expanded galleries round out the package. Minor gripes about the motion-pointer controls and a couple of toned-down visual effects pale next to the achievement.

An exceptional remaster with completely reworked textures, added lighting, and redone models that make the classic look night-and-day better, while holding a consistent 60fps in both docked and handheld modes. Modernized control options, including dual-stick and gyro, make it feel far more current. The only real gripe is the price, but it is well worth picking up.
