World Tour is a gimmicky single-player mode that squanders the combat, but the arcade cabinets are a cool touch and the core game easily passes the 3am test.

A fantastic entry that gets the fundamentals right early, with sublime fighting, the fresh risk-reward Drive Gauge system, and accessible classic, modern, and dynamic control schemes. The open-world World Tour story mode adds substantial content, visuals on the RE Engine look superb, and the bundled Year 1+2 edition offers strong value with rollback online. Negatives are a clunky per-mode control default, a jarring drop to 30fps during World Tour fights, and a hip-hop soundtrack that abandons classic character themes.

A standout reinvention that lowers the barrier to entry while keeping depth for veterans, split across World Tour, Battle Hub, and Fighting Grounds. The new modern control scheme makes special moves accessible to novices, and the art direction, character designs, and in-fight visuals are spectacular. Open-world hubs lack fidelity and some missions get tedious with backtracking, but it's the fighting game to get this year.
