Fun evolution of Borderlands formula set in a whimsical fantasy kingdom. Character creation is impressive and writing is much improved, though endgame loot treadmill can feel tiresome.

The best-looking Borderlands game with excellent, satisfying gunplay, a clever overworld-plus-first-person structure, and a flexible class system that allows fun builds like a glass-cannon mage. However, it inherits and worsens Borderlands 3's flaws: cringeworthy, unfunny characters, a poor story, easy boss fights, and an overwhelming flood of weapons and gear that turns play into constant inventory-sorting busywork. Worth considering for gunplay fans, but the full price and Epic exclusivity are drawbacks.

A competent 20-hour looter-shooter that adds welcome new systems like lootable spells, armor and amulets, plus solid build variety and excellent scaling co-op. It is held back by writing pitched at a younger audience that abandons the series' dark humor, undercooked melee and underused D&D fantasy setting, and a feeling of familiarity rather than reinvention. A wait-for-sale for longtime Borderlands fans, but a fine entry point for newcomers.
