A baffling mishmash of welcome growth and unwelcome change that still delivers the best version of the hack-and-slash the series is known for. Combat is top-notch, with viciously coordinated enemies, deliberate Souls-like officer duels, and spectacular escalating battles that build to climactic sieges. It stumbles badly off the battlefield, though, with a tedious overworld and a soulless, default original protagonist whose dreadful origin story constantly kills the pace.

Muso game with strong strategic element. Reboots series with new protagonist interacting with historical figures. Engaging combat with tactical commands and morale system. 35-50 hour campaign.

Dynasty Warriors Origins represents a new level for the Musou series, offering evolved tactical action combat with parry mechanics, compelling Three Kingdoms narrative with branching storylines, and abundant post-completion content. While weapon progression is gated behind story completion and the character roster is reduced, the meticulous craftsmanship and addictive gameplay loop make it a great success.
