Our analysis

Returning to original hero Max Caulfield a decade later, this sequel is visually polished with standout character animation and a genuinely compelling new friend in Safi, whose murder kicks off a dual-timeline mystery. The second half rockets along with bold, debate-sparking directions for the franchise, but the writing carries too many rough edges: uneven side characters, tonal missteps, the contentious handling of fan-favorite Chloe, and nickel-and-dimed early access decisions. Strong moments and an intriguing vision are undercut by a lack of satisfying resolution.
