8 of 8The definitive version with native 4K and locked 60 FPS on Switch 2. Gorgeous visuals and flawless gameplay, though new content is mostly multiplayer-focused with no 120 FPS support.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a sublime platformer with endless creativity, surprising innovations, and flawless execution.
Deluxe re-release with elegant improvements and challenging boss battles. Must-have sequel.
A standout 2D Mario that excels at telegraphing and celebrating its own creativity, packing an inventive Wonder effect and fresh enemies into nearly every level. The constant wacky transformations and strong level design place it among the best in the series, with only the talking flowers landing as an embarrassing misstep.
The best-designed 2D Mario in many years, breaking free of the formulaic New Super Mario Bros. rut with tight, liberating controls and a refreshing sense of speed. The Wonder Seeds dramatically transform levels for huge variety and replayability, and equippable badges further change how stages play; visuals are charming and the audio is top-notch. Minor gripes include the slightly overpowered elephant power-up and a more stressful ghost-based multiplayer, but it represents excellent overall value.
The best 2D Mario game in nearly 30 years, breathing new life into a stale formula with relentlessly creative levels and game-bending Wonder Effects. Strengths include excellent pacing and difficulty balance, inventive level types, varied power-ups led by the fun Elephant Fruit, surprisingly enjoyable multiplayer, fantastic visuals, and one of the series' best soundtracks. Minor disappointments are that badges replace distinct character abilities and Yoshi only appears as a rideable companion in multiplayer.
Switch 2 Edition makes the already-glowing base game approach masterpiece status for newcomers, but patching in new boss battles and content retroactively robs the additions of impact. For $80 first-timers get a mind-blowing complete package; existing owners face an anticlimactic $20 upgrade where no single piece of content justifies the cost on its own. Both disappointing and exactly what the game needed.
GameSpot: bold modern classic; rightful Super Mario World successor.

“A strong entry in the 2D Mario franchise with excellent level design variety, beautiful visuals, and creative mechanics like the wonder flower ability. However, it's held back by weak boss design, overly helpful and annoying flower characters, underutilized badge mechanics, and reduced multiplayer interactivity.”

“A generous expansion with excellent single-player content featuring challenging training grounds and well-designed new courses alongside engaging multiplayer attractions. Recommended for dedicated Mario enthusiasts and groups of friends, though high entry barriers limit casual appeal.”
