A memorable, mold-breaking shooter with a surprisingly good campaign told through varied short stories and a multiplayer mode that is the main draw. Massive-scale Operations battles, gorgeous graphics, and truly impeccable sound design stand out, though it demands a beefy CPU to run well on PC.

Returning to it years after launch reveals a far more complete and polished experience, with the four DLC expansions fixing the original map and content shortage and taming the absurdly abundant explosives. Solid, weighty gunplay and the excellent Operations mode shine, even if the spread mechanic feels frustratingly random and some maps stay too flat and exposed. Its haunting WWI atmosphere and immersive audio make it one of the most engrossing shooters around, despite not topping Battlefield 4.

The best Battlefield in a decade and a refreshing change thanks to its World War I setting.
