Gears 5's campaign opens with dull cover-shooting and immersion-breaking bugs, but from Act 2 tough new enemies and an upgradeable robot companion make it bloody good fun; the empty open world, micro-transactions and day-one DLC cost it points.

A surprisingly good and genuinely memorable entry with a well-written, emotionally driven campaign, strong character development, stunning visuals, and excellent variety in bosses and encounters, backed by a standout robot sidekick and welcome split-screen co-op. The forced open-world segments add nothing of value and the convoluted multiplayer microtransaction system is a serious low point, but it remains a solid, enjoyable shooter worth around an 8.
