A confident, well-executed XCOM-style tactics game that authentically captures the Gears of War universe, from meaty sound design to deep class customization and talent trees. Excellent boss battles, smart enemy and mission design, and a roster system that encourages experimentation are the highlights, though the non-optional side missions grow repetitive and the high-production-value story is generic and forgettable. Less ambitious than XCOM with lower stakes, but a fantastic, highly recommended time.

A strategically outstanding turn-based tactics game with fantastic squad controls, brilliantly aggressive continuous overwatch, deep class trees and loot-driven gear customization, and a genuinely smart AI that punishes mistakes. The endless enemy waves and combo-building are a blast, though the loot management gets tedious, missions grow repetitive, and the story leadership writing falls flat. Still rated among the best in the genre.
