Our analysis

A massive, deep strategy experience that arrives on Switch with a surprisingly elegant control scheme using joy-cons or touchscreen, making it one of the easiest versions to play. Gameplay is excellent and packed with content, choices, and win conditions, performance holds up well even docked, and the soundtrack shines. The lack of online and hot-seat multiplayer and the missing Rise and Fall expansion are letdowns, but it remains a wholehearted recommendation.

Our analysis

A great entry that feels notably different and improved over its predecessor, with deeper leader personalities giving each nation a distinct character and standout district-based city planning that adds real strategic depth. Fleshed-out research and active civics make the mid game far less of a lull, and multiple victory paths encourage varied playstyles. The divisive bright, cartoony art style is the main drawback.
