Super Mario 3D World

Galaxy evolution with solid platforming but disappointing movement simplifications. 8-direction lock hurts.

A polished, undeniably fun Wii U platformer with pleasant, vibrant visuals, great character animation, and a huge variety of powerups, plus chaotic four-player co-op that is a riot with friends. It is held back by limited, somewhat dated controls catering to Wii remotes, the troublesome grab button causing unfair co-op deaths, and a difficulty curve that stays very easy until the brutal final and Special World levels. Simpler than past 3D Marios, but on its own merits it is a genuinely enjoyable, high-polish experience.

ZP finds a competently designed platformer with retro charm but uninspired execution. Cat suit mechanic forces limited level design. Co-op is competitive rather than cooperative. User comment integration detracts from experience.
