The free-to-play base game of Destiny 2 has become fantastic and is well worth jumping into, but the Shadowkeep expansion itself is hard to recommend at its $35 price. The new storyline runs only three to four hours, leans heavily on reused assets from the first game, and offers little upfront content, though the raid and Vex invasion mode are genuine highlights. The poorly implemented New Light onboarding leaves new players lost with no clear guidance.

This expansion feels both comfortably familiar and like a fresh start, leaning hard into nostalgia with returning enemies and locations on the Moon. The campaign missions are thrilling with stunning set pieces, but there simply isn't much of it before the focus shifts to grind and repetition, and the lack of new enemy types underwhelms. Smart additions like the seasonal artifact, finisher mechanics, and the Garden of Salvation raid make the refinements worth celebrating despite the modest amount of new content.
