3 of 3A thoroughly engrossing JRPG that has stood the test of time, blending a gripping murder-mystery narrative with a social-sim daily life and dungeon crawling. Strong character development and the refined one-more turn-based combat shine, and Golden's additions (manual skill inheritance, extra Social Links, a new dungeon) make it the definitive version. The visuals show their age, but the gameplay, soundtrack, and story more than compensate.
Nearly a pinnacle of the JRPG genre, excelling in every department a fan could want. The gripping murder-mystery story and lovable cast pair with brilliant gameplay mixing daily life, socializing, and dungeon crawling, all wrapped in effortlessly stylish presentation and a standout soundtrack. It is a slow burn and the dungeons could use more puzzle variety, but it remains a timeless, high-value classic.
An enjoyable JRPG with a breezy, colorful intro and the signature Persona blend of mundane life-sim and secret dungeon-crawling that proves compelling. However, it feels like a less-polished predecessor to Persona 5 in nearly every respect, with a weaker soundtrack, lower-stakes story, repetitive procedurally generated dungeons, and grindy vendor-trash side quests. The style and ideas are present but not yet fully realized, making Persona 5 the better starting point.
