Strong character development and the refined one-more turn-based combat shine, and Golden's additions (manual skill inheritance, extra Social Links, a new dungeon) make it the definitive version. The visuals show their age, but the gameplay, soundtrack, and story more than compensate.

An enjoyable JRPG with a breezy, colorful intro and the signature Persona blend of mundane life-sim and secret dungeon-crawling that proves compelling. However, it feels like a less-polished predecessor to Persona 5 in nearly every respect, with a weaker soundtrack, lower-stakes story, repetitive procedurally generated dungeons, and grindy vendor-trash side quests. The style and ideas are present but not yet fully realized, making Persona 5 the better starting point.
